For an introduction to the World Servers' Spread see ArkLetter 5 This month's World Server's spread started out as a nagging question, but then it unspooled like a well-worn sweater, pouring forth from a single broken thread into a great mass of curly yarn. For Christmas I asked for the Madame Lenormand Tarot published by Lo Scarabeo. The request was sparked by an article that Mary Greer wrote in 2008 about Lenormand's association with Etteilla and other Tarot occultists of her time. I'm sure it was not an original impulse, but Mary made me curious to figure out the degree to which Lenormand's ideas are actually present in these Tarot minors, and the degree to which they might be related to the formal Tarot pack at their root.
This is not as straightforward a project as it sounds, because subtle influences could be separately represented via the images, the titles, the interpretive spiel attached to each card, or even via Lenormand's overall style and approach -- that of reading layers of symbols from multiple oracle-packs at once. How ere the characteristic cartomantic ideas that have become associated with the Lenormand packs related to Etteilla's Tarot card illustrations? We are nearly 200 years past Madame Lenormand's heyday. How has her symbolic legacy held up, and where does it fit in the meaning-system of Tarot cards? Acquiring this pack seemed like a first step towards forming an opinion in this matter.
It’s time to write our yearly overview of planetary motions, and take a closer look at how the "footprints of the Gods" might play out over 2010. I will also say a few words about the current NewMoon at the end of this article, but the bulk of my comments will be directed towards the year's larger trends.
Mercury starts out the year retrograde (behind the Sun from us) and conjunct Pluto in the sign of Capricorn. No doubt everybody has his or her own holiday horror story to recount! But right here on the same day as NewMoon, his retrograde completes, and by Feb 4th when he catches up with his former progress, all is forgiven. Given the fact that the sign is Capricorn, we have to assume that whatever systems failed during the retrograde were due to small but pivotal parts of the mechanism simply wearing out from hard use. Consider it attrition, think through your fixes so you don't set yourself up for future blow-ups at inconvenient moments, and learn to schedule your review and inventory protocols a little more often.
